Creating and Using Modules

Resources:

Creating modules - compiling the Linux kernel.

The typical way to compile a kernel involves the following steps:

Loading modules - kmod, modprobe and insmod

Both modprobe and insmod are used to load modules. Modprobe is a higher level utility than insmod and uses a dependency file created by depmod and, optionally, /etc/modules.conf to resolve aliases and dependencies.

Listing modules - lsmod

Unloading modules - rmmod

Configuring modules - /etc/modules.conf

[ To do: needs to be finished and updated for 2.6 kernel ]
